Forest Medicine | Why Forest Bathing Works
How the Forest Supports Your Health
A sense of ease and well-being. Moments of happiness. Feeling more connected to yourself and to nature. We notice many of these effects almost immediately. But what is actually going on beneath the surface?
Forest air contains bioactive plant compounds such as terpenes, which we take in as we breathe. At the same time, the sights, sounds, scents and slower pace of the forest can influence our stress response. The diagram brings these two pathways together.
This is where forest medicine becomes fascinating: Shinrin Yoku research explores how the forest environment and airborne plant compounds relate to stress hormones, natural killer cells and other immune processes. Studies have reported changes in stress markers and NK-cell activity after time spent in the forest.
Psychoneuroendocrinoimmunology – PNEI for short – helps us understand how closely our mind and body are connected. It looks at the interplay between psychological processes, the nervous system, hormones and the immune system. In other words, what we perceive and feel can trigger measurable responses in the body.
So the forest does not just feel good – our bodies respond too, including on a biochemical level. But as with so many things that support our health, regularity matters.
Returning to the forest regularly gives body and mind repeated opportunities to unwind, recharge and deepen our connection with nature.
