IM-WALD-SEIN® Biophilia Travel | Connecting with Nature

A Deeper Way to Experience Remarkable Places

The most memorable journeys are about more than seeing beautiful places. They leave time to absorb the atmosphere, enjoy meaningful encounters, relax, explore and simply savor being there.

We curate every journey from a biophilic perspective: immersive forest and nature experiences, Shinrin Yoku and unhurried time outdoors are thoughtfully combined with culture, local encounters, relaxation and enjoyment. Each journey follows its own carefully designed rhythm, with space for discovery as well as time to pause.

The experience itself is at the heart of every journey: engaging with nature through all the senses, slowing down, discovering new perspectives and developing a deeper connection with the landscape. Along the way, the IM-WALD-SEIN® team provides carefully chosen impulses and insights while leaving plenty of room for individual experience.

What you can expect: exceptional destinations, thoughtfully selected experiences and a distinctive blend of nature, Shinrin Yoku, culture, relaxation and enjoyment, curated and hosted by the IM-WALD-SEIN® team.

What Makes Biophilia Travel Special

IM-WALD-SEIN® Biophilia Travel grew out of a pioneering experience with a scientific foundation.

In 2017, we traveled as a group of twelve Shinrin Yoku pioneers to the highlands of northwestern Croatia. Surrounded by pristine forests, remarkable landscapes, and regional culture, we conducted our forest bathing experiment. At the same time, the idea for a new way of traveling began to take shape. Together, we spent immersive time in the forest, explored exceptional natural places, took part in carefully selected activities and workshops, and enjoyed local culture, cuisine, meaningful encounters, and relaxed time together. The joy was palpable, and the response to this special time in and with the forest was extremely positive.

Our experiment built on Dr. Qing Li’s pioneering research on Shinrin Yoku.

We wanted to know whether the effects on immune function and well-being described in his studies could also be observed under real-world vacation conditions. Our research question was: Does an organized short vacation that includes three forest visits lead to a measurable increase in natural killer (NK) cell activity and improvements in psychological and physical well-being in a diverse group of twelve participants?

The results were as compelling as the journey itself.

They showed how naturally a memorable travel experience and the health-promoting potential of the forest can come together. Alongside positive changes in psychological and physical well-being, we found a significant increase in natural killer (NK) cell activity, measured through blood samples taken before and after the trip. For us, this was a defining experience: travel can be joyful, surprising, relaxing, and deeply connecting while also creating the conditions for the forest’s health-promoting potential to unfold.

At the heart of this is the fascinating relationship between people and nature.

The Biophilia Hypothesis describes our deeply rooted affinity for the living world. Attention Restoration Theory (ART) helps explain how natural environments can restore directed attention and replenish mental resources. Findings from forest medicine, Shinrin Yoku, and environmental psychology offer further insight into the places, experiences, and rhythms that can make travel especially restorative.

IM-WALD-SEIN® Biophilia Travel grew from this very combination.

We curate exceptional natural settings and travel experiences, bringing together immersive time in nature, relaxation, movement, meaningful encounters, culture, and the pleasures of travel. Scientific insights and many years of experience provide the foundation. At the heart of every journey are the joy of travel, memorable experiences, and moments that stay with you.

Fascinating, isn’t it? Dr. Melanie H. Adamek has documented the full story of our forest bathing experiment, from the travel program and research findings to the many memorable experiences along the way, in her German-language book IM-WALD-SEIN® – Das große Buch zum Waldbaden und Shinrin Yoku.
